Description

Mobile devices have traditionally been viewed as "thin clients" or "edge devices" that serve primarily as user-input devices, but that are expected to offload the compute-intensive processing to (non-edge, back-end) servers. With technology advances, there exists the potential now to view mobile devices as "thick clients," and going even further, to rethink them as "thin servers". Given the proliferation and enhanced capabilities of mobile devices, the realization of a "wireless cloud of nearby smartphones" is now within grasp.


The Hyrax project proposes a novel vision of a hyperlocal edge-cloud, i.e., a computational/storage cloud comprised solely of a collection of nearby wireless edge devices, with the purpose of pooling these devices’ data and processing power to support a new class of proximity-aware applications that benefit the owners of these devices. The premise behind these edge clouds is that all of the constituent nodes are edge (and not server-caliber) computers, and that any and all computation is performed completely within the edge cloud, i.e., there is no offloading/tethering of the computation/data to a non-edge, back-end, traditional-cloud infrastructure.

Hyrax middleware
A 3-layer middleware that provides a building block upon which crowd-sourcing applications may be built. The design and implementation of the middleware was motivated by work on real-world applications. The middleware provides a Java API for Android devices that allows for the establishment of links using heterogeneous communication technologies (e.g., Wifi- Direct, Bluetooth), and the combination of these links to form a logical edge-cloud network. On top of this functionality, services for edge computation, storage, publish-subscribe and streaming were developed.,  Hyrax middleware Webpage
Network connectivity
A thorough assessment of current wireless technologies in the context of peer-to-peer edge-networks; new topology proposals that allow Wifi-Direct groups to form autonomously and to effectively and efficiently establish connections between them.,
Simulation tools
A simulation tool to validate mobile edge-cloud applications reliably and at scale, as field experiments can be onerous and hard to replicate, in regard to factors such as the number of nodes, geographical area, network setup, or mobility patterns. The tool was built on top of Mininet-Wifi and expanded it to support Wifi-Direct, including cloudlet nodes.,
P3Mobile
A service that supports parallel or distributed computing over edge-clouds. Recognizing the limited application domain of such services for computing alone, we are exploring the feasibility of using such services for networks of devices such as drones, where they could be used to plan and coordinate multiple vehicle missions and to allow data interchange and real-time computing to be performed (e.g., for decision making).,
Panoptic
An edge-cloud system that enables the search for missing people, similar to the commonly known Amber alert system, in high-density scenarios where wireless infrastructure might be limited, e.g., concerts, while featuring privacy and security by design. Given the limited resources of the mobile devices, namely battery capacity, Panoptic offers a computing offloading functionality that tries to minimize data leakage while offering acceptable levels of performance.,
Ephesus
A distributed file storage service for mobile edge-clouds. It allows users to share files without requiring infrastructural communications, through a key-value store API implemented on top of a distributed hash table (DHT). To cope with churn, the service implements a best-effort approach to data consistency and persistence. The built-in mechanisms are adaptive to the popularity of data items, e.g., more frequently requested items are prioritized for replication among peers. Ephesus is also energy-aware, making a device disengage from the DHT when its battery level goes below a certain threshold.,
Thyme
A time-aware publish-subscribe service for mobile edge-clouds. The service leverages on a data-centric storage (DCS) approach rooted on a geographic-aware distributed hash table. In Thyme, time is a first order dimension, each subscription has an associated time interval, starting (and ending) either in the future, present or even the past. The combination of geographical positioning with a DCS approach make it easier for nodes to hint on whether data are close by or not, because position bears a close relation to topology in wireless networks. The subscription of events in the past provides for a data persistence system.,
Flux
A streaming service that allows users to gather information from devices according to regions, defined by constraints in certain attributes, usually values from sensors. The system allows lightweight byte-code tasks to be injected in the devices and then activated to send data at a given frequency to servers. They are deactivated once they leave the region associated with the task.,
Ramble
An application that allows geo-referenced content sharing in environments that have limited infrastructural communications, motivated by applications such as rescue operations in disaster scenarios or citizen-science data collection in areas with low communication coverage. Ramble makes use of mobile edge-clouds, networks formed by mobile devices in close proximity, and lightweight cloudlets that serve a small geographical area. Using an Android app, users “ramble” through a given area whilst generating geo-referenced content (e.g., reports, photos, or videos), and disseminate that content opportunistically to nearby peers, cloudlets, or even cloud servers, as allowed by intermittent connections of different types.,
Muse
A content distribution, tracking system and data analytics system for improved museum visits.,
